A new project on expeditions in Antarctica . . .

What are we up to at Wellington in these days ?

First and most important - we are trying to survive Acqua Alta / High Water (whose threaten has come back in the last week) and horrible rainy weather. But we are brave. Oh, blimey, you can believe me - we are!

Therefore I thought to myself  'why don't we organize something on very cold places? possibly something about men in hard conditions, survivors and all the happy staff? '

Well no, the answer is no - if you are thinking we might organize an event on Wilbur Smith's Hungry as the Sea. Although I personally like Wilbur very much and do believe he is, in his own genre, an exceptionally gifted writer. The idea is not that of speaking about athletic Nick Berg and astonishingly beautiful Samantha I-do-not-remember-her-surname.
What a pity. Next time.

Actually, it occurred to me to think, by the by, that we are in Anno Domini 2014 and that brave man called Sir Ernest Shackleton lef from Plymouth for Antarctica precisely 100 years ago - it was 1914 and First World War was just starting...

At the same time, a friend of mine, a scientist working both for Ca' Foscari University of Venice and the C.N.R. (National Research Centre, Italy), went to Antarctica in December and stayed there for around a month....

So the idea is - we will have a lecture (date and time still to decide so keep an eye on this blog or on our Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/wellingtonbooks.venice ) on ANTARCTICA, EXPLORATIONS, SURVIVORS !

Warren Cairns, my scientist friend, will speak of his own experience in the South Pole but he will also compare it to Shackleton's expedition and will illustrate the progress which has been done in these last 100 years.

So let's go to work and set up things!
