About us

Bringing Anglo-American & Postcolonial literature to Venice

Why on earth the Duke of Wellington?

For no particular reason, actually, apart from the fact that we all end up mentioning him, while in Venice, in the months of October and November, when we have willy nilly to wear our boots in order to walk in the calli flooded by High Water (Acqua Alta).

Our books are precisely as our boots are - waterproof. We think Venice is a city of culture, we are not afraid of tourists - in fact we love them and think they are very welcome - and we are not at all afraid of water . . . and so are our readers!

The aim of our bookshop is that of bringing English, American and Postcolonial literature to Venice, both for the Expatriates' Community and for the passers by, for University students and for Venice lovers. Since the times of Sir Henry Wotton, English ambassador to the Most Serene Republic, the relationship between Venice and the English literary world has been unique: Byron, Browning, Ruskin, Waugh, Du Maurier are only few names . . .

Come and visit us for a good book, a chat and a cup of tea!
